Manchester City overcame a resilient Blackburn Rovers team in their FA Cup third round replay, eventually running out 5-0 winners as Micah returned to action for the first time in five weeks.

Having returned to first team action two weeks ago following a hamstring injury, Manuel Pellegrini handed Micah a start at right-back, whilst ringing the changes across the park from the team which beat Newcastle at the weekend.

Rovers, sitting eighth in the Championship, started brightly, seemingly not intimidated by the occasion and looking to get forward, Ben Marshall going close with a free-kick that Costel Pantilimon was happy to watch fly wide.

For City, Javi Garcia went closest in the opening 30 minutes, his long range effort testing the palms of Paul Robinson, whilst Micah himself went close as James Milner’s cross in evaded several defenders and bounced just inches above his head with the goal at his mercy.

The hosts did find a way through as the game entered injury time in the first half, Fernandinho picking out Alvaro Negredo who guided his header home to make it 1-0, grabbing his 20th goal of the season with it.

He scored moments before half time, and he doubled his and City’s advantage moments after. Aleksandar Kolarov’s superb ball over the top of the Blackburn defence allowed the Spaniard a yard of space, and he chipped home with a deft finish to make it 2-0.

The visitors weren’t going to go down without a fight, and Joshua King went close with a header soon after, forcing Pantilimon into a save two minutes later.

Edin Dzeko wasn’t going to let his fellow strikers run away with their goal tallies, and he grabbed his first of two for the night as he curled home from a tight angle following Navas’ cut-back to make it 3-0, all but putting the game to bed.

Negredo made way for Sergio Aguero to return after his own injury lay-off, and with his second touch, just 50 seconds after being introduced, the Argentinian had found the back of the net. Dzeko found his strike partner who turned and fired through a defender’s legs to make it 4-0.

Dzeko rounded things off, Navas again provider as he crossed in for the Bosnian to flick home and make it 5-0, whilst Milner went close with a fierce free-kick in the dying minutes.

5-0 it finished as City progress to the fourth round and keep alive their chase for silverware on four frontiers.
