Aston Villa slipped to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, themselves in search of a much-needed win, with the returning Diego Costa netting for Jose Mourinho’s men.
Tim Sherwood’s men started brighter, with Alan Hutton firing straight at Asmir Begovic, Jordan Ayew curling just wide and Rudy Gestede directing over the bar from a few yards out early on.
However, a mix up in Villa’s defence saw Willian dispossess Joleon Lescott before picking out Costa who had a simple finish to make it 1-0 with 34 minutes on the clock.
With a goal advantage, Mourinho’s men wrestled control of the game and 9 minutes after the restart they doubled their lead. Cesc Fabregas picked out Costa who attempted to cut the ball back across the penalty area, but as Hatton made the block he inadvertently looped the ball over Brad Guzan and into the back of the net.
Lescott went close at the other end and Fabregas missed a chance to make it three as the final whistle was blown, leaving Villa in 18th in the Premier League.
