Manchester City’s hopes of lifting the Carling Cup were dashed for another year as a second-half West Brom comeback saw them secure a 2-1 victory.

Micah was rested along with several other first-teamers, but Roberto Mancini did field some of his more well-known faces, Patrick Vieira, Adam Johnson and Roque Santa Cruz amongst them.

The Eastlanders looked in control for most of the game and it was no surprise when they grabbed the lead through rejuvenated Brazilian striker Jo.

Debutant John Guidetti pounced on the loose ball and made his charge through the centre of the field, and he duly set Jo up for a simple tap-in.

City were kept aware of the threat their opponents posed, however, as once-hotly-tipped midfielder Giles Barnes unleashed on goal, though Shay Given was equal to it.

With a bench made up of names such as James Milner, David Silva and Vincent Kompany, Mancini must have been sitting pretty by half-time as his men trudged off with little more than a light sweat on them.

But the script was to be well and truly torn up after the break as the Midlanders fought their way back into the clash.

It was Gianni Zuiverloon who breathed new life into the content, sweeping home from 20-yards after a disjointed build-up.

The visitors were shell-shocked and, whilst their spending and ambition perhaps suggests other competitions are of greater importance, Mancini and his staff were clearly not keen to exit the competition so early.

They barely had time to recompose themselves, though, when the Baggies grabbed a second, Simon Cox losing his man and picking out the same spot in Given’s goal to hand his side the lead.

Milner and Silva were added to proceedings in a vain hope of finding a leveller, but as it was the hosts held out for a hard-earned victory that takes them in to the next round instead of their big-spending rivals.
