By Micah Richards | In My Week
It’s almost Christmas and I just wanted to take the time out to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
City of Manchester Stadium
It’s been a rollercoaster of a year for me with ups, downs and twists nearly every week. It looks like we, Manchester City, are going to be going into the New Year in the bottom half of the table, but no one within the club is about to panic. We all know and believe we can easily start rising up the table and get right back in contention for a Uefa Cup spot for next season, and we’re ready to battle.
On a personal level, all my friends and family have been there for me this year and without them I would find things so much harder – they are not only there through the ups but they are there for me through the downs. I don’t think they fully understand how much they do for me, so I’d also like to thank them for being there for me.
On top of that, I would also like to thank all the fans for their support throughout 2008. They have been really loyal and have showed us great support, and I hope they continue to show such faith as they play an integral role from the start to the end of every season.
Manchester City are in the bottom half of the table
Granted, domestically things are not going as well as we would like but, as for the Uefa Cup, finishing top of our group was really pleasing. We now face FC Copenhagen in the last 32, which will be a tricky tie, but I’m confident we will progress. I have said from the start that we’re in the competition to win it, and I still believe we can go on and challenge for the trophy.
Aside from that, approaching Christmas also means we approach 1 January and the opening of the transfer window. A lot has been said in the press recently about transfers and who will be arriving in January.
The gaffer has promised the fans an exciting transfer window, so I anticipate plenty of rumours and speculation throughout January. I think we do need some new faces so that we can begin to rise up the league, though how many signings and who they are is not down to me. I’m sure the gaffer will already have a list of players who he wants and will do all he can to secure the signatures of some of the best and biggest stars in the world.
Shaun Wright-Phillips came through the academy
There has also been speculation in the papers linking me with a move away from Manchester City, and while it’s always flattering to be linked with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea etc., I’m really happy at City. As a team we’re like a family, I really enjoy just being part of the club, and I appreciate how lucky I am. I have a lot of good friends here, from players who I came through the academy with like Shaun Wright-Phillips and Stephen Ireland, to players who have been brought in such as Javier Garrido, Valeri Bojinov and everyone else.
I hope you all have a nice festive period, and here’s to a successful 2009.
