Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood has appointed Micah as his captain, citing his “winning mentality” as a key reason in his decision.
Micah completed his move to Villa Park in July and has appeared regularly throughout pre-season at centre-back.
On announcing his decision, the manager said: “On the field captain will be Micah Richards. He gives us a fresh start, that’s for sure.
“He’s someone that’s come in and we think Micah is the correct choice to lead the team. He’s vocal and leads by example.
“Micah’s got an opinion which is good and he’s not afraid to share it which is also good.
“He can bring a winning mentality here. It will take time and everyone else will need to pick it up. That will come.”
Sherwood also announced that the club captain will be Gabby Agbonlahor.
Villa begin the new Premier League season away at newly-promoted Bournemouth on Saturday.
