Manchester City cruised into the group stages of the Europe League courtesy of a comfortable 2-0 win against FC Timisoara at the City of Manchester Stadium.
Micah was one of several players to retain their place in the starting line-up following the impressive defeat of Liverpool last weekend, though Roberto Mancini elected to make seven changes.
City set out their stall early on as Nigel De Jong raced clear and drew a fine save from Costel Pantilimon, whilst resurgent striker Jo did well to work an opening and his subsequent shot looked goal-bound until the last second.
The Brazilian went closest soon after as his header from David Silva’s cross was tipped over, and his strike partner Emmanuel Adebayor should have done better when he collected the ball and fired wide.
The deadlock was finally broken after an exquisite pass from Patrick Vieira. The Frenchman isn’t always known for his attacking prowess but his though ball split the Timisoara defence and Shaun Wright-Phillips was on hand to benefit, knocking the ball home to hand Mancini’s men the advantage.
In he second half the visitors did at times threaten the City defence. Ianis Zucu had Joe Hart scrambling with a long range effort though the in-form stopper was equal to it, and just as they got some momentum behind them the hosts extended their lead.
Dedryck Boyota lost his marker as Silva crossed the ball in and the towering defender was on hand to head home to make it 2-0 on the night and 3-0 on aggregate.
The floodgates had well and truly opened and Adebayor had another chance to net one as he capitalised on a poor back-pass only for his effort to swoop just wide.
Silva himself almost added a goal as his close-range shot was blocked, whilst Jo’s header dropped a yard wide of the far post moments later.
As the seconds ticked away Silva went close once again with a curling effort that was parried clear, and Mancini’s men closed out the game to book their place in the next round of the tournament.
