Manchester City were knocked out of the Europa League despite a 1-0 win and a valiant effort at the City of Manchester stadium, having gone a man down early on.

Mario Balotelli saw red for a high tackle before Aleksander Kolarov gave City hope with a lashed finish, and whilst the home side toiled they were unable to find another goal to take the tie into extra time.

England manager Fabio Capello must surely, however, have been impressed with Micah and fellow City defender Joleon Lescott, whilst Adam Johnson made his long awaited return to action.

Having lost out 2-0 in the first-leg, City knew they had a task on their hands and they pushed for an early goal, Micah doing well to get a ball across the six yard box only for Balotelli to sky his effort.

The Italian was in the thick of the early action as he missed another decent effort with his head, and he then blocked a target from David Silva that looked to be flying towards its target.

Micah was making a nuisance of himself on the right flank and he once again cut the ball back in to the danger zone, with Balotelli’s subsequent flick cleared by the Dynamo Kiev defence.

That was, however, to be the end of Balotelli’s input. As he went to block a clearance on the right flank, he appeared to leave his foot in the tackle and caught Goran Popov with a high boot, and he duly received his marching orders.

However, with their backs to the wall City found a goal. A free-kick on the edge of Kiev’s box was tapped on for Kolarov who took a touch before blasting home left footed to make it 1-0 on the night.

City continued to dominate proceedings into the second half and Micah powered his way to meet a cross only for the header to a fly a yard too high, before Kiev issued a reminder of the danger they pose with Andriy Yarmolenko tried his luck from 20-yards for Joe Hart to tip round the post.

Kiev also went close from a corner as Denys Harmash headed goal-ward, forcing Lescott to head off the line.

City had two final chances before the final whistle went, Yaya Toure curling a free-kick towards goal only for it to be well held by Kiev’s stopper, before Tevez seized on a moment of hesitation in the opponent’s defence to lash a half volley on goal which was equally deflected.

The hosts certainly put in the effort but alas it wasn’t to be, with Dynamo Kiev marching in to the next round and City left to rue a missed opportunity for silverware.
