Manchester City suffered defeat at the hands of Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, a late goal from Fernando Torres after a defensive mix up securing a 2-1 win for the hosts.
Chelsea had grabbed the lead when Andre Schurrle tapped home from Torres’ cross, before on-fire Sergio Aguero fired in the equaliser with a powerful left-footed drive. However, the travelling City support were left speechless in the dying seconds after Joe Hart and Matija Nastasic compounded to allow Torres to round the out-of-sync pair and grab a last-second winner for the Blues.
Micah lined up among the substitutes, as did the impressive Alvaro Negredo, as Manuel Pellegrini sought to match Chelsea’s midfield. And that they did in the opening exchanges, with neither side carving open their opponents in the first 15 minutes bar a skied volley from Gary Cahill.
The breakthrough came after 33 minutes when Torres charged down the right and cut the ball across goal to pick out Schurrle, who netted in front of legend of German football Franz Beckenbauer to put Mourinho’s men 1-0 up. Torres almost grabbed an immediate second as he curled in from the left-side of City’s penalty area, only for the superb effort to rebound off the crossbar.
The break came with City still to really get going, but whatever was said at half-time seemed to do the trick as Aguero fired his side level four minutes after the restart. Samir Nasri picked out the Argentine, who took one touch before firing beyond a surprised Petr Cech to make it 1-1.
Both sides had chances to grab the lead with Ramires and Aguero going close again, but it was Chelsea who were to seize the three points. A long ball forward looked like it would be dealt with comfortably by Nastasic, but Hart raced off his line, seemingly to clear the ball, only for miscommunication to see the defender head beyond the stopper. Torres anticipated the mix-up and was on hand to race on to the ball and tap home to hand his side the win.
