Rudy Gestede struck the winner as Villa beat rivals Birmingham City 1-0 at Villa Park to progress to the fourth round of the Capital One Cup.
The Frenchman netted just after the hour mark as Tim Sherwood’s side established their authority on the game in the second-half of a tight encounter.
Jacques Maghoma went close for the visitors with a right-footed effort that dragged just wide, whilst Gabby Agbonlahor was smothered at the last second as he lined up a shot.
The rest of the half was fairly uneventful, but thankfully there was an improvement after the break as Villa began to find some momentum. Scott Sinclair went close having been teed up by Jordan Ayew, before Gestede finally broke the deadlock.
The striker had toiled up to then without much success, but he rose highest to plant the ball downwards and into the back of the net to make it 1-0 with 62 minutes on the clock.
Maghoma had a fine chance to level soon after as he was sent through one-on-one with Brad Guzan, but he scuffed his shot allowing the keeper to make a comfortable save.
Jack Grealish and Ayew went close with further efforts as Villa finally exerted their dominance, and it was they who progressed to the next round with a graft of a win.
