Villa’s demise gathered apace as they suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of a resurgent Chelsea side who, in truth, rarely had to step out of third gear.

Following Remi Garde’s sacking, Eric Black stepped in as caretaker manager but was unable to stop Villa whimpering towards relegation from the Premier League.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, impressive in an attacking midfield role, opened the scoring after fine work by Mikel, tapping home via a deflection from Joleon Lescott.

Debutant Pato added the second, converting from the spot after he was brought down in the box, and the Brazilian had a role in the Blues’ third as his interchange allowed Pedro to fire home.

The Spaniard grabbed his second soon after, capitalising on Brad Guzan’s parry to make it 4-0 and seal another dismal afternoon for the home support.
